The Design Methods and Design Steps of Machine Parts

The design of machine parts is to study the design problems of general machine parts from the aspects of machine working principle, carrying capacity, structure, and maintenance, including how to reasonably determine the shape and size of the parts, how to select the materials of the parts reasonably, and how to make the parts have good quality. ZHONGKEN compiled the following design methods and steps for these machine parts.

Design methods

1. Theoretical design

The so-called theoretical design is a design based on design theory and experimental data. It can be divided into design calculation and check calculation. The design calculation is based on the working conditions of the parts, the calculation criteria are selected, and the main geometric dimensions and parameters of the parts are calculated according to the specified requirements.

The check calculation is to first draw out the main dimensions and parameters of the part according to other methods, and then check whether the part is safe according to the requirements specified in the calculation criteria. Since the relevant dimensions of the parts are known during the check calculation, the structural factors and size factors that affect the strength can be included, and the calculation results are more accurate.

2. Experience design

Empirical design refers to the design based on the existing empirical formula or the designer’s own work experience, or with the aid of analogy methods. It is mainly suitable for parts that require little change but have typical structural shapes, such as boxes, frames, and structural elements of transmission parts.

3. Model experiment design

This design is mainly aimed at some important parts with huge sizes and complex structures. According to the results of the preliminary design, a small size model is made in proportion, and the characteristics of various aspects are tested by experimental methods, and then the original design is checked according to the experimental results, which make gradual modifications to achieve a perfect design.

Model experiment design is a design method used to accumulate new experience, develop new theories, and obtain good results when the design theory is not yet mature and the existing experience is not enough to solve the design problem. However, this design method is time-consuming and expensive and is generally only used in particularly important designs.

Design steps

(1) The type and structure of parts should be selected according to the requirements of the parts, and on the basis of familiarity with the types, characteristics, and application scope of various parts.

(2) Determine the load acting on the parts according to the working conditions of the machine.

(3) Choose suitable materials according to the use requirements, process requirements, and economic requirements of the parts.

(4) Perform calculations based on the failure analysis of the parts and the determined calculation criteria to determine the main dimensions and parameters of the parts.

(5) The reasonable shape and structural size of the parts should be determined according to the functional requirements, process requirements, and standardization requirements.

(6) Check and calculate the important parts only when necessary to determine the safety degree of the parts during work.

(7) Draw the working drawing of the part.

(8) Compile design calculation instructions.
